BIRN municipality debates bring practical changes

30 April 2009   The impact of municipal debates organised by BIRN are often felt most strongly in the long term, but in the regions of Peja and Prishtina the event is already beginning to bear fruits.

A few days ago, UNDP allocated 25,000 euros from its budget for municipalities for the restoration of the culture house in Zahaq, Peja, which was described as a “public toilet” in the municipal debate Life in Peja.

In the course of this same debate, the chairwoman Jeta Xharra also raised the issue of the dangerous conditions which students from the Raushiq village have to endure on their walk school. Recently, Peja region has received a pledge from the Ministry of Transport that a pedestrian bridge will be built over the busy road linking Peja with Gjakova.

Another positive outcome from the Life in Municipality debates can be seen in Prishtina.

Almost a week after the municipal debate with Isa Mustafa, Mayor of Prishtina municipality, during which Jeta Xharra raised the issue of high public transport prices, the prices decreased by 0.10 € for each of four zones where public buses operate.
