19 June 2009   Balkan Investigative Reporting Network announces a vacancy for the following position:

Journalist

As a journalist for Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, based in Prishtina, you will have the opportunity to play an important role in a team of experienced journalists who work across the Balkans to bring quality, impartial news to readers from across the world. Although reporting experience would be an advantage, a keen knowledge of current affairs, a flair for writing and a desire to learn the tools of the trade are essential. Excellent written and spoken English and Albanian are required.
 
You will be expected to research, investigate and write news, analysis and features on a range of subjects for BIRN’s Balkan Insight website and its English language newspaper Prishtina Insight. You will also be given the chance to help develop a young, but influential newspaper – Prishtina Insight – and shape its future editorial content as it grows.

 Task and responsibilities:
1. Preparing short news in English for BIRN’s online publication, Balkan Insight
2. Preparing journalistic articles for BIRN’s newspaper in Kosovo, Prishtina Insight 
3. Preparing various reports in English for BIRN’s webpage
4. Translating different texts between English and Albanian
5. Assisting BIRN’s editorial team in research and administrative tasks
6. Assisting BIRN team with research, editorial and administrative tasks for the Life in Kosovo show.
 
 Suitable candidates should also have:
1.      Excellent knowledge of written Albanian
2.      Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English
3.      Previous experience in journalism, or at least enthusiasm for writing
4.      Communication skills
5.      Skills in written translation between Albanian and English, and vice-versa
6.      Desire to write about different political, economical and social subjects
7.      Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and good knowledge of the internet
 
BIRN journalists will have these opportunities:
1. To receive training in international journalism standards and investigative journalism
2. To participate in planning and investigating topics for Life in Kosovo show
3. To become a part of a regional network that functions in nine regional countries 
4. To become part of investigative teams and work alongside professional journalists
 
Knowledge of other foreign languages and any other additional skills are also welcome.
