BIRN Kosovo became a member of the International Debate Education Association, IDEA, during the orgnaisation’s general assembly held in the Netherlands between August 4 and 5.
BIRN was represented by its programme manager Krenare Maloku, who told the General Assembly as well as presented about her mission and programme activities.
The IDEA meeting took place following the Youth Forum 2010, an international debate championship and debate education programme, which is organised by IDEA.
It gathers hundreds of high school debate teams from all around the world to compete in the style of Karl Popper and British parliamentary debates, as well as providing debate and argumentation skill courses.
This year, the Youth Forum took place in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands, where the two Kosovar teams who won the “Prishtina Open 2010 Karl Popper National Debate Tournament” participated.
Eight debaters and coaches from Kosovo were among the 250 participants from 45 countries that participated in the 2010 Youth Forum.
The debaters argued over whether states should ban the import of goods produced by child labour and on whether juveniles should be tried as adults.
“The Kosovo debaters had a satisfying championship and a great experience in the forum, while the whole event was a great educational and intercultural dialogue experience” said Kushtrim Palushi, who was a coach participant in the debate forum.
The debate programme for high school students in Kosovo is run by a coalition of NGOs including Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, Fol Movement, Youth Initiative for Human Rights,YIHR, Initiative for Progress, INPO, and Syri i Vizionit, SiV.
Since September 2009, the coalition has established three debate clubs in Kosovo.
As part of the project, a national debate tournament was held in February this year, where 50 debaters from Prishtina, Peja and Ferizaj competed on the topic: ‘Should children be allowed to work?’
During the general assembly, IDEA announced that the next Youth Forum will be held in Istanbul, Turkey.
BIRN, together with the coalition of NGOs, will continue its work spreading the debate programme across Kosovo and giving opportunities to high school students to develop their argumentation, public presentation and critical thinking skills, as well as deepen their knowledge on global issues such as the environment, child labour.

Situation and the Problems at the University of Prishtina
Analytical report of research into the standards and problems at the University of Prishtina. Ten years since the end of the war in Kosovo, the University of Prishtina (UP) continues to suffer from a variety of problems, resulting in persistently low quality courses being offered. For this reason, BIRN conducted research into the problems faced by UP students. The data gathered suggests that, out of the many issues reported, the most significant are: the non-implementation of contemporary teaching and assessment methods, the lack of practical work for students, the lack of appropriate academic literature, arbitrary assessments by
professors and generally poor relationships between students and their professors.
