Life in Kosovo: New Year Festivities
08 January 2009 This week, Life in Kosovo showed how Kosovars celebrated the New Year.
Arif Muharremi spent December 31 filming fireworks and celebrations in Pristina as well as going to people’s houses to see how people were celebrating indoors.
Besides visiting an Albanian home, the journalist spent time in a Roma house in Kosovo.
“I wish everything was as it used to be and that everyone was free and in work and that we lived in peace together,” the man of the Roma house said.
Ibrahim Karabegu, a Kosovar who hosted the journalist, said he was not celebrating much, out of solidarity with those living in poverty.
“There is no wine and no alcohol this year, as we are not in a position to allow such luxuries,” Karabegu said.
However, it should be noted that while Kosovo is the poorest country in Europe, the amount of fireworks people let off over New Year was huge.
Another section of the show, “People’s Camera”, showed people’s home movies of the New Year celebrations, sent in via email. Indoor environments and celebrations with fireworks were the major themes of the recordings.
The final section of the programme was given over to analysis of economic developments in Kosovo during 2008.

Situation and the Problems at the University of Prishtina
Analytical report of research into the standards and problems at the University of Prishtina. Ten years since the end of the war in Kosovo, the University of Prishtina (UP) continues to suffer from a variety of problems, resulting in persistently low quality courses being offered. For this reason, BIRN conducted research into the problems faced by UP students. The data gathered suggests that, out of the many issues reported, the most significant are: the non-implementation of contemporary teaching and assessment methods, the lack of practical work for students, the lack of appropriate academic literature, arbitrary assessments by
professors and generally poor relationships between students and their professors.
