07 May 2009 This Thursday's Life in Kosovo began with a new type of show, in which Kosovars who have become ambassadors for the country on the international scene are showcased.
Viewers had the opportunity to watch a debate with actress Arta Dobroshi, during which she talked about her career and her professional experience, with a special focus on her last movie Silence of Lorna, which was to be screened for the first time that week at ABC Cinema in Prishtina.
Arta Dobroshi, an acting graduate of the Prishtina Academy of Arts, is one of the few Kosovar actors who have pushed into cinema’s international scene, with her appearance in Silence of Lorna (2008) and Sorrow of Mrs Schneider (2006). As the lead actress in Silence of Lorna, directed by famous French directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Dobroshi was nominated for the best leading actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.
In front of an audience of art students, film enthusiasts and professors of the Academy of Arts in Prishtina, Dobroshi spoke about her life.
Speaking about her first experience in acting, Dobroshi explained that she had first experienced acting in America, where she had theatre studies lessons and was given a role in a play.
“I was thinking about design or acting, and when you are 18 you are not too sure of what you actually want,” explained Doborshi.
After her role in one of Orhan Kerkezi’s play, Dobroshi decided to choose acting over design. However, given the situation at the time she finished high school, Dobroshi explained that her parents were a little worried about her choice, but still supportive.
The discussion then moved on to the roles Dobroshi played during her acting career.
In the course of the show, viewers were shown extracts of Dobroshi's work from her time as a student at the Academy of Arts, about which Dobroshi talked with great enthusiasm.
“When I was in Belgium rehearsing for The Silence of Lorna, because of the nature of the character I was playing, I spent a lot of time alone, even during rehearsal breaks and at the times away from the set.”
Moreover, she also told how a death in the family at the time, contributed to the role of Lorna.
“During my eights day of language lessons, I felt weird. I knew my grandmother was going to die. At that moment I wanted to go back, but after that I spoke to all my family members who told me that my grandmother would have loved to see me succeed. So I carried on in Belgium,” added Dobroshi, who was still clearly emotional about this episode in her life.
The audience consisted of some of Dobroshi’s former professors at the Academy of Arts in Prishtina, including Fadil Hysaj, professor at the academy.
When asked to critique The Silence of Lorna, Hysaj said that the film was so real, that after the second scene it didn’t feel like a film anymore.
“For me an actor reaches the pinnacle when he or she sacrifices himself symbolically, allowing the character to settle within the actor,” said Hysaj, adding that this had been what he liked most in Dobroshi’s acting in the movie.
Then the discussion was opened to the rest of the audience, who were keen to know about the details of Dobroshi’s experience on the set of The Silence of Lorna.
Arbnesha Grabovci Nixha, professor at the Academy of Arts in Prishtina, said that Dobroshi’s audition for famous brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne was a miracle itself.
In the end, Dobroshi, together with her cousin, also a famous singer in Kosovo, Shpat Deda, sang a song, revealing her music talent.
In the Culture in Kosovo section, Arif Muharremi looked at a report on private art galleries in Kosovo.
At the end of the show, BIRN broadcast Kosovo's Son-in-Law section which featured a parody of Shpat Deda’s video clip with lyrics written about Dobroshi.

Situation and the Problems at the University of Prishtina
Analytical report of research into the standards and problems at the University of Prishtina. Ten years since the end of the war in Kosovo, the University of Prishtina (UP) continues to suffer from a variety of problems, resulting in persistently low quality courses being offered. For this reason, BIRN conducted research into the problems faced by UP students. The data gathered suggests that, out of the many issues reported, the most significant are: the non-implementation of contemporary teaching and assessment methods, the lack of practical work for students, the lack of appropriate academic literature, arbitrary assessments by
professors and generally poor relationships between students and their professors.
